That Poor Gopher June 14, 2020

Yesterday the glass doors to the deck were fully open, and swooping toward me at an alarming pace was the heron with a gopher in his mouth.  Just as he got to the house, he adjusted his altitude to clear the roof, but at the same time a red-tailed hawk came out of nowhere.  The poor little gopher dropped from the heron and into the clutches of the hawk.  It was all in the blink of an eye.

The Quail June 14, 2020

Over the years, the pasture at Pi has been stomping group for myriad wildlife, but for the first time it hosts a pair of quail.  The male and female stay together, perching along fences and railings.  No babies, yet.

But yesterday I discovered a single quail egg just under the fender of my car.  I looked all around, including under the car, but couldn’t find any siblings.  I brought the egg inside to keep it from getting crushed in the driveway and to keep an eye on it.

So, what to do?  I follow the quail duo every day hoping to discover their cache.  If I find it, should I put the little egg into the nest?
