It is
Mother’s Day today and as I flew home on United 816 from visiting Annie in
Seattle, my window seat afforded me a sweeping view of the California
coastline. On our descent, I saw the telltale
signs of Tomales Bay, a narrow slit of grey-blue with heavy fog clutching the
west side, completely obscuring the Point Reyes peninsula itself, while the
inland areas remained brilliantly clear.
As we edged our way southward along the Bay, I could pick out its
succession of sandy beaches: Indian,
Heart’s Desire, Pebble, and then the two parts of Shell. The town of Point Reyes Station was obvious,
and I traced Route One heading out of it toward Marshall to discover the dense
line of cypress trees that border the horse pastures. Pi’s pasture looked much larger than I had
expected, although I couldn’t see my home itself, obscured as it was by those
pesky eucalyptus of which I have written previously. But just a few more miles and I was able to
spy a snippet of the guesthouse roof, under which I knew a friend was dutifully
writing. Ah, to soar from the plane and
gently alight upon Pi on this pleasant afternoon! That would have been something!
