A century and a half after
their invention, the Pirates of Penzance have landed at Shell Beach and seized the Dance Palace in Point Reyes Station for the weekend. This
beloved Gilbert & Sullivan operetta is the third production in an annual series
by the West Marin Players and effervesces with dedicated local
talent. Last summer I had attended their
Mikado, an operetta in which I had performed decades ago, and I vowed that this
summer I would try to immerse myself in the fun. Thank you, thank you to Susie Stitt and
Deborah Benedict, the stage and music directors, respectively, for offering me the
chance to frolic as a daughter of the modern Major General, and thank you to the
entire Pirates cast and crew and to the West Marin community for their warm
embrace.
