I awoke to
the call and response of birds cackling and my cat meowing. I took a look outside to see what was going
on and was taken aback by the pastel landscape before me. It was as if the natural world had been
replaced by a lovely painting, with a peach-colored sky over a turquoise
hillside, both muted by a few cottony clouds.
I have never seen the field so still.
Not a single blade of grass was moving, but instead each was inert,
permanently bent by the westerly winds. I
looked and looked to find some evidence of animation, but other than the birds,
there was nothing. I felt as though I
had fallen into a photograph or maybe, just maybe, time had simply stopped.
